Is it ‘Gluten sensitivity’ or FODMAP food intolerance?

Gluten has gated many foodies from their favorite breads and wheat products. People suffering from the autoimmune disorder celiac disease can have extreme reactions to gluten, while others experience negative but less severe digestive issues.

But some who claim they’re ‘gluten sensitive’ still feel the same stomach problems even after eliminating gluten from their diets.

So what gives?

Gluten-sensitive suffers may be reacting to the high content of FODMAPs in their diet. FODMAPs are short-chained carbohydrates found in all sorts of common foods, like wheat, barley, legumes, dairy products, fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Jane Muir, one of the lead author’s of a 2013 gluten sensitivity study conducted by Monash University, Australia, makes the case against gluten sensitivity and discusses FODMAP dieting in a CBC Radio report.
